Abstract

This article deals with the social, political, and cultural history of law enforcement institutions, as well as prisons, focusing in Argentina but with references to the Latin American context. Taking into account the historiographical production in English, Portuguese, and Spanish languages, the piece analyzes the main topics that have been studied so far including some themes that were not approached yet which represent a challenge for the incoming research agenda. In order to circumscribe a historical frame for a complex topic, the article concentrates on the production from the late XIX Century to the middle of the XX Century. However, when necessary, references to previous and subsequent historical periods are included.
